Book Review: TH1RTEEN R3ASONS WHY by Jay Asher (2007)

I actually intend to write this around last week, but because of the busy schedule (school, UGH), I ended up late with the new review and I couldn't wrap my head around that fact. I wanted to blog but school deprives me of it... ACK!

But here I am, as promised at least from my last book review, I will be posting this new one. Hope you guys enjoy it... And somehow you fall apart as I did...

(Hopefully, there won't be harsh reactions to any of my reviews... THANK YOU!!!)

I've read the book almost a month ago. It was the time of the devastation of Typhoon Haiyan/ Yolanda struck the Philippines and my province, Batangas, was put into a storm signal of 2. I was bored. There was no electricity which means there's no TV, no WIFI and no laptop to plug in. You really couldn't go out because of the weather. It's like risking your sweet, simple life.

So, I cooped myself in my room around 5 PM; when the sun was down and you couldn't really see anything. But I was really into the idea of reading the book to let it pass without turning a page and I was in a "bookish" mood , so I lit up a candle, perched it on the side table next to my bed and read away. And while the remaining hours of day turned to night, I suddenly realized that I could not put the book down, even for a sec. I was too engulfed by the story that I was not worried about the fragility of my eyes.. (I wear glasses guys...)

I've had a few share of tears (actually, buckets of it), from all the Young Adult and contemporary teenage novels I've read. Th1rteen R3asons Why by Jay Asher is one of those books that made me cry, worked it's miracles, and made me dysfunctional.

Here's my brief description of what the novel is about:

MUSIC POD: December Playlist, TOP 10

Here's my first post for my MUSIC POD page! This post includes my current favorites for the month of December, but it could also change in the course of time. This may also include old songs that I feel like listening to during the month... Let's get started...

TOP 10:

1. PURE HEROINE by Lorde (ALBUM)

Now, if you don't know who Lorde is, then I'm completely sorry for you. She's a girl from New Zealand who writes her own music and was discovered after releasing her EP The Love Club. From then on, her career exploded. Her first single out of her debut album, PURE HEROINE, "Royals", topped the BillBoard 100 Alternative, making her the 2nd woman to take the top spot in the alternative charts after 17 years. At the age of 16, Lorde has definitely a lot to show and prove and her album does not disappoint.

Tracks:
1. Tennis Court
2. 400 Lux
3. Royals
4. Ribs
5. Buzzcut Season
6. Team
7. Glory and Gore
8. Still Sane
9. White Teeth Teens

The songs included in the album are not your typical high school girl who just felt like writing about a break up or a certain achievement. The album boasts of dark tunes and melodies that introduce the ideas of death as well as pain. Of course, it is typical to have songs about teenagers since Lorde is one but she puts twists in it, making an ordinary idea seem so much more complex. An example is "White Teeth Teens" which basically just talks about good looking individuals but actually talks about vampires (this is my opinion on it... Yours?)
"Glory and Gore" is a much darker take on a song for Lorde but that's what's so amazing of what she can do. There will be people who would not appreciate Lorde's music especially in this age of dance music but with the success of Royals, I don't think that Lorde will fail in this industry. As long as she works hard for it, I don't see any reason for her to lose to any big guns.

Here's her biggest hit out of PURE HEROINE: ROYALS:

2. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Original Movie Soundtrack by Various Artists (ALBUM)

Fans of The Hunger Games series delved into the world of Catching Fire as it premiered worldwide on November 21/22, 2013 in all cinemas. I love movie soundtracks. I really do. It allows you to hear so many new artists that you've never heard of or at least tried to listen to more of their songs. While watching Catching Fire, I was also attentive enough to listen to a bit of music playing in the background, maybe get an idea of what exactly was playing or what I would be hearing from the soundtrack. I only had the chance to hear "We Remain" by Christina Aguilera and "Atlas" by Coldplay, so getting to hear the soundtrack was something I looked forward to after watching the movie. OH YEAH, the movie was on FIIIIAAAAAHHH! HAHA!

Well, the songs in the album did not disappoint. I loved every single one of them! "We Remain" was an instant favorite and "Gale Song" by The Lumineers, though I did not entirely approved of the title, once heard, I cried over it. It's that good! And "Shooting Arrows at The Sky" by Santigold is my jam! I love this album so much!!!

Here are five songs from the album for you to listen to. Download your own copy now on iTunes.

3. Story Of My Life by One Direction (SONG)

I already have the Midnight Memories album of One Direction. It's actually pretty good. But there's just this one song that speaks to me every time. I dunno. I'm not a guy though to be so emphatic with the situation of the guy in the story. But I guess in a way, the idea of being able to keep something got to me. Plus the music video helped.

I like the lyrics to the song. It reminds you of Gotta Be You from their album Up All Night though a lot more mature. The song also caters all the voices of the boys. I actually find it a problem sometime in their boy band that at most times, only Zayn, Harry and Liam would sing like CRAZY! HEEELLLLOOOO! Niall and Louis are there too! And they have good voices to boot. So it's great that I actually got to hear more of them in the song and also the album!

Anyway, yeah. It talks to me, really, like in my sleep and that's why I keep on playing it. It hurts but it's a feel good song.

Here's the song. Credits to beatricef for this clip...

4. Yours Truly by Ariana Grande (ALBUM)

I saw a baby grow so fast! Ariana Grande may be older of a few months from me, but because of her character as Cat Valentine in Victorious and Sam and Cat, I just couldn't grasp how fast she's becoming a superstar. Her debut album, YOURS TRULY made hits on the BillBoard 100 and on iTunes. He first single in the album, "The Way" featuring Mac Miller, garnered her 1 million copies sold, making it a platinum record.

The thing about Yours Truly is that you couldn't actually tell if it's actually Ariana Grande. What I mean is that her voice could actually be that serious. Coz she always plays this crazy little Cat Valentine with the high pitched voice on TV that it's hard to imagine her singing about heartbreak or love. But she makes it all work. And I love her for that.

The whole albums sings of love and fun which depicts Ariana's character and personality so perfectly. I actually listen to this album on repeat sometimes just to savor each song. And the "whistle" register to her voice is something to be envious about! Like a young Mariah Carey in the making only much sweeter and cuter...HAHA!

My favorites from the album would have to be "Honeymoon Avenue", "Daydreaming", "Almost is Never Enough" and "Popular Song" featuring MIKA. But I guarantee that every song in this album is worth your headphones stuck to your ears all day just listening to the miracle of Ariana's voice.

Listen to YOURS TRULY here:

YO! T'WAS MY BIRTHDAY! THANK YOU!

Happy December misfits! I know I haven't been around lately coz of school! I'm sorry! But thank you to all those who still view my posts! ME LOVES YOU!

Anyway, if a few of you know, I celebrated my birthday a few weeks ago, November 27 and I officially turned 20... (OH GOD! I keep reminding myself! WRINKLES! ACK!) But even with the numbers rolling in, I must say that my 20th is one of the most amazing birthdays evaaaah!

So before the actual date of my birthday, I went on Twitter to stalk a few people that I love from AUTHORS, TV personalities, musicians, and of course, one of the best ones yet, RYAN HIGA... *warm and fuzzy feeling seeping through*

So imma insert some print screens of these fantabulous tweets. Please be minded of the tweets I sent them just so that they'd actually reply back... Blackmail inducer right here. LOL!

AUTHORS (These will be included in the BOOK NERD page of the blog) :

This one is from Kiera Cass, author of The Selection Trilogy. Go check that out! I flipped a bit coz of this... She's also a huge One Direction fan! Directioners there who read this, go follow her on Twitter.

Rainbow Rowell is one of my favorites though I haven't actually read all her books. She's just so sweet! I wish you saw the emoticons. But t'was too late. Anyway, those are hearts! :) She also favorites and retweets my tweets. She replies a lot too! You gotta love her! <3
Rainbow Rowell is the author of the New York Times Best Seller books, Attachments, Eleanor and Park and FANGIRL

Jay Asher is a recent favorite though he's been an author for a while now. He's the author of Th1rt3en Reasons Why (which I will review on. This will be updated) as well as The Future of Us with  Carolyn Mackler. He's been an amazing guy to talk to, even though they were short... I look forward to his new book! :)

And of course, the very first person I actually stalked on Twitter for a birthday reply greet! Meet Mr. Neil Gaiman. He's the author of many best sellers such as The Graveyard Book, Anansi Boys, Stardust, Coraline, Good Omens, American Gods and he's most recent success, The Ocean at the End of The Lane, which I'll also review on soon! :)
He's such a fantastic character and he's so funny! Go follow him!

Well, that's it for authors. The next ones that I bombarded with tweets to reply to me are famous TV personalities. :)

"SELFIE" on Your Dictionary

Hi Misfits! Are you aware that the word "SELFIE" has actually been voted "WORD OF THE YEAR" by Oxford Dictionaries this 2013? Well oh well, that's what Google's for, as Caspar Lee would say. I love you Caspar Lee.

Anyway, a couple of days or maybe a week ago, I stumbled upon a Rappler post on Twitter that the word "SELFIE" is now part of the Oxford Dictionaries Online, not yet on Oxford English Dictionaries (hopefully soon enough).

The word "selfie" means: (Taken from Oxford Dictionaries Online)

selfie

Pronunciation: /ˈsÉ›lfi/

(also selfy)

noun (plural selfies)

informal
a photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and uploaded to a social media website.

The word "selfie" was actually used in 2003 but rooted around the time of 2002. Its use was first heard or seen in an Australian internet forum. See the Oxford Dictionaries Online Blog for further details on the story.
I think they better hurry up with printing out that new Oxford English Dictionary! Now for some, maybe it's a waste of time to even think about this or that it's totally bonkers. But why think that? I mean with the rise of social media, particularly Instagram, it's almost impossible not to be a part of the fandom. Even Obama and the Pope are in on the fun! Selfies are everywhere, wherever you may be from. I am seriously guilty with being rather obsessed with taking a few selfies of myself. Maybe not a few.

WHOA!

Uhm, so as much as I think that you guys will be repulsed, I would at least like to prove a point. LOL! So here are some of my selfies...

Book Review: The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan (2004)

(Hopefully, there are no harsh reactions to any of my reviews. Thank you.)

I was lucky enough to receive something special that day. My uncle sent me some money which I didn't expect. I asked him for it a few weeks back, but he wasn't replying, until one day he sent me a message saying that he sent me some cash. I headed to a pawnshop after finishing up enrolling for my second semester at school. Afterwards, I headed to the bookstore and grabbed the books that actually spoke to me while I was there. One of which is the book I'm going to be reviewing now.

I agree Agnes!!! IT REALLY IS!!!

There are a couple of books that I've read where I would actually be too attached to a character or be drawn in by a scene in a page. I would be lying if I said that I never thought Jace was real or that Sherlock Holmes could actually be my dad! And with this book, The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan, I ended up noticing the same symptoms... that I've become too attached to  the characters, that each line they spewed out, either hurt or made me extremely happy. A book that actually took me to endless possibilities.

Hey Boyfriend!

Hey Dad!

The Realm of Possibility revolves on the stories of 20 teens, each with a voice, all of which are intertwined with one another or at least aware of each other's existence. The main story focuses on a gay couple-Daniel and Jed-who are in a verge of celebrating their first anniversary. But as I said, there are 20 people in the story, all of which are catered with different scenarios. There are five chapters, and each chapter consists of four people who tell their story. I noticed stories on heartbreak, moving on, self-consciousness, weakness, pain, suffering, falsity, longing, regret, discrimination and of course, everyone could not live without the LOVE bit. You could never go wrong with it.

Photo Credits to YA LOVE Blog

I fell in love with each character of the story, though some of them are way too hard to understand-why they actually go through what they are going through. But through these characters and stories, I felt a piece of myself with them, that I've actually at some way, felt the same way as they did, maybe not as much but definitely a speck of there somewhere. I believe this is one of David Levithan's amazing superpowers! He is a total genius for me! He was able to draw me in to every situation. He made me laugh, cry, angry and all of those emotions mixed into a bundle of something that you actually could not explain. I would like to call it FEELS... BOOKNERDS, back me up here!

A Rewarding Day

This post is short guys. You may consider reading it, but it's my diary, so I can rant with anything that I want. LOL!

Anyway, yesterday was one of my most productive days around the house. It's been a while since I actually swept the floors of my room. I'm incredibly lazy by nature, so cleaning is not really something I look forward to doing in an everyday basis. But with my father around, it's quite impossible not to.

So yesterday, even with a heavy heart, I cleaned the whole second floor of the house. I dunno what was more demanding but it was the most tiring day I've ever had.

BEAT!!!!

But was able to survive. And in all honesty, I found the cleaning, rewarding. It wasn't necessarily fun, but when I saw how SHINY the floor got and how symmetrical the bed got, I said to myself "Good job Jayvee. You deserve a pat on the back..." *pats back*.

When Bored... I Watch Youtube Videos

If every person in this planet, who died, would be required to write a letter to God before they enter heaven (or hell), with the list of things that they've loved while they lived, I'm pretty sure that most people would write about money, sex, drugs (hopefully these things did not make you happy), friends, family, a Ferrari, a girlfriend and those what-nots that we've received throughout the course of our lives. We've all learned how to love sweet nothings throughout our existence since things nowadays are pretty much given in the form of sweet nothings. Do you get my point? Maybe not.

No one better to point it out than Charlie...

Anyway, since I am bored today, with nothing much to do, except, tweet, tweet, tweet, I decided that I should do another, When Bored, I...episode. And to give an answer to my query on top, (which is not exactly a question), then one thing that I would definitely write and thank God for is the existence of Youtube.

HEP! Not just simple home videos with cats scratching their ears or something or someone who suddenly tripped off the couch and everyone started laughing about it, I would thank God for Youtube and more so, the Youtubers who shaped and made YT a sensation.

Oh. WOW! To think Sheldon got that... HAHA!

Which is why, I've been subscribed to top YTubers such as Ryan Higa, KevJumba, SMOSH, TheFineBros, Shane Dawson and many more over the course of 3 years being an avid YT fan. However, I ended up losing my old account, so I had to make a new Google Account, which is sad because there were some YTubers who are good, but I don't remember who.

This GIF was pretty much how it was when I watched the video. I had to repeat the whole scene to make my stomach ache from laughing too hard... RYAN IS A GENIUS!

Till recently, I found some new ones like Jack and Finn Harries of Jack's Gap, Marcus Butler, Caspar Lee, Zoella and more...

Uhm, hello Jack, Finn... *waives quite shyly* TEEHEE! Wait, that's supposed to be for Ryan... HAHA!

I couldn't ask for a more eventful day than to procrastinate, bore myself out and end up watching Youtube videos. And heck, it pumps up the rest of my day, which is very wrong to say so myself since usually I watch videos at 3 in the afternoon (on weekends and when there's no school), so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't get some decent sleep at night... HAHAHA!

The Angst/Joy of a College Student Going Through... Viewing of Grades..

It's been a while since I've done this Angst and Joy episode. I mean, I've only done it once but it seemed too much if I didn't do it at an appropriate time. So today's episode is going to focus on both Angst and Joy since we are gonna talk about, yup! Grades.

Now for sure any college student's either pissed or jumping for bliss once they see/saw their grades... I for one am part of this huge spectrum. Okay, let me start...

Le Angst!

So college mongrels, how were you're grades? Did you cry over them? Did you want to rip off that piece of evidence that you almost failed a subject, apart? Yeah, I feel yah brother. And as much as I would like to think that being in college is much different than when we were in high school, I can't help it dudes, I'm sorry.

I put some heart and soul into my studies over the course of the semester, but why is it that my grades were in the verge of giving any genius a heart attack? I didn't fail though guys. Phew. But coming from decent grades before, I sincerely feel bad for the grades I received this term. I don't want to blame the teachers at all because I know that I had my cracks to fill, but then again, I end up worrying about my distant future.

Book Review: Wag Lang Di Makaraos by Eros S. Atalia (2011)

I've been doing a lot of reviews and as you've noticed, their more on movies, especially since I've been into some indie ones. Anyway, if you are not aware of it, I am a self-acclaimed and proud book nerd! I have been since I was 6! LOL! Seriously though, I have had an affinity with books since I can remember. I even read most of the books at our high school library. If you don't believe me, you can ask my friends and the high school librarian too...

What I'm trying to say is that I love books and I want to share my thoughts with you about the books I read. And this is not just to brag that I have this book and that, but more on trying to give a sense of what the book is trying to convey (in my point of view, of course). Don't worry. I don't plan on bashing the books, rather be subjective with it and give my most honest opinions... Shall I get started?

With my first INKBLOTS visit (I'll talk about that later), came the sale of Sir Eros S. Atalia's books. If you don't know who Sir Eros is, well, I feel incredibly sorry for you... Sorry... Not sorry... Anyway, he is a known author and a Don Carlos Palanca Awardee for Literature. He also writes for Pilipino Mirror which is a tabloid.

I've got fangirl issues with authors... TEEHEE! Sir EROS! YOU ROCK!!!

Getting back to the books, I bought four of them and one is Wag Lang Di Makaraos (2011), which I read during my 1 week hospital stay. No internet, No TV meant I had all the time in the world to read.

Wag Lang Di Makaraos features 100 flash fiction stories, all written by Sir Eros, subdivided into different

Macarons? Go To CHEZ KARINE

I've always been the girl who'd clamor over sweets over anything. Usually, it'd be the most tiresome thing in the world, but definitely rewarding. I remember that first chocolate I had. It was a CRUNCH bar, and from then on, I knew my life would never be the same again. Of course, my teeth are giving a jolly "HURRAH" YEY, CAVITIES!

So since coming to Manila, and knowing that there are tons of shops to find, especially dessert shops, I knew I had to be first in line. But with the messy schedules and all the sh*t that's been happening to me lately, I decided that going food hopping would be a bit grueling and tedious. So, I put that on hold for now.

But I'd like to do a food find tour nonetheless. I have discovered this bakery on TV when the lifestyle channel, ETC, featured it on their show EtceteraOnETC. Guys, I introduce you to CHEZ KARINE BAKERY.

Now I know you'd say, I'm not a relevant source, and blah blah blah. But I did say it was a find, rather than a review of each plate of whatever it is they have at the bakery or restaurant, so I think that my post is legit nonetheless. I will be posting photos of going to CHEZ KARINE for real once my sister and I go food hopping soon. For now, let me savor the fast-approaching reality.

This post will also feature photos from real foodies and their reviews. Photos will be credited to the real owners. So, there. Saved from Copyright!

Sorry for the delay. Why don't I get started.

So, CHEZ KARINE is french for "At Karen's Place" and it's owned by Chef Karen Yang, a pastry chef who studied at Le Corden Bleu in France to pursue a degree in making desserts and all the jazz and has worked with top pastry chefs including those of Pierre Hermé, owner of a dessert boutique at Rue Bonaparte. She settled to come here to Manila to open up CHEZ KARINE.

When Bored, I... Do A Simple Slam

I decided to do this little series called "When Bored, I...", which has the same concept as The Angst/Joys of A College Student Going Through... That sort. And since I always find the time to be bored,
why not do something to get rid of that sudden boredom.

So one is this post which I am horrendously typing now. I'm actually gonna do this slambook thing I saw in one of my good friend's blog account.

Check out his blog: http://theincendium.wordpress.com

This slam template is available at this website:
http://slambook2020.blogspot.com/p/slambook-quotes.html
There are actually more available, but I was too lazy to scan them, I just went in and went with the obvious. It was laid on the table so, TAKE IT, JAYVEE!

Okie-dokie! Why don't I get started?

Your Name/Petname?- Hmmm. Jenivieve, Jayvee, rarely Jen. Yeah, pretty much just Jayvee

Are u working or Studying or other? -I'm studying as of the moment...

Describe yourself in 3 sentences? -Really? 3? Oh well...-_-
"A frustrated writer, A procrastinator, A wallflower."

There, satisfied?

Dream Boy/Girl?- Hmmmm. Currently, I'm really into Ansel Elgort...

Oh I do, Ansel. I really do! We can get married now! #Fangirl

Describe ur Daily rotin? -The HELL? It's spelled "ROUTINE" whoever made this template. 'Kay, daily routine: Slap myself in the face 3 times so I'd wake up naturally, so my eyes don't droop off sleeping again.

What are some words or phrases you use most? -HAHA. WEH? TEEHEE. LOL.

What are your hobbies? -Reading a mountain of books, listening to indie and rock and roll music. You can toss in pop from time to time. Writing, though it's far more than just a hobby.

Relate much?

It Was A Grueling Month

Have you noticed that I haven't posted for like a whole month? YIKES! I know, and I'm sorry Misfits. I tried, but how could I even focus writing for my blog when I can hardly focus on the two case studies, a learning system design, a compilation of broadcast scripts (Comm student, remember?), a wicked proposal, visual design requirements, and two major exams from minor subjects. UGH! I wanted to die!

Artist Interview: Valerie Ann Chua, LISTEN TO THIS QUIET GIRL

I am happy to announce that I have thought of a brilliant idea to do specials like interviews  for my blog, featuring people who I know, may it be in a personal basis or through their crafts and profession.
And for this special, I am ecstatic and filled with joy because I got the opportunity to interview one of my favorite artists in the whole wide world, Ms. Valerie Ann Chua.

For those who know the blog/website Quiet Girl, you may be familiar with her and her work which features her subtle paintings and style. And for those who aren't, you may want to get a dose of this fabulous individual.

A Letter To My Future Boyfriend (Wherever You Are)

Dear To Whom It May Concern,

Hi! I know we haven't met each other yet, or we already have. It's just that we never talked or we did, just so happens we don't know each other a lot... I don't know. We might be closer to each other than we think we are. What I'm aware is, to myself, that I'd wait for you...

Anyway, all I want you to know is, I am not gonna be the typical girlfriend. Why you ask? Well, first of all. I'm weird. And I like being one. I tend to do things out of the ordinary, or say things out of context or basically, you might never understand me but please do.

Where Your Real Friends At?

This post is truly dedicated to those a-holes who have made a fool out of me, making me think they are my real friends, legit y'all. But all they are are blood sucking, backstabbing, unbelievable creatures... Here are some examples of situations when your so-called friends are really nothing more than that...

TRUST IS BIG, MAN... IT REALLY IS

When you think you know everything about your friend, well think again coz at some point they have something against you, something they could never say or they just like making a fool out of you. One moment you are all close to them and second you find out, they've been talking about you behind your backs... FRIEND 101 (which I just basically thought of and could apply to you...) says "NEVER BETRAY A FRIEND..." It applies with keeping secrets or never make them sail the seas alone...

If you could ever help save the forest, what exactly would you do? Let's say you turn into, I dunno, a teeny, tiny person, then would it be possible? Well, with lots of faith in magic, fantasy and whimsy, I'll say yes, especially after seeing EPIC (2013). Get yourselves some Leafmen!
